Patrol
Lances on patrol duty _generally_ ride the Ankh Road to Karif's Caravanserai
and then return to Nagarr. There are two Lances riding patrol at any one time,
and they are generally on different ends of the run, one coming from Nagarr and
one returning. To keep the patrols unpredictable, however, they are allotted
twelve days to make the trip which usually takes ten. Lance officers sped up or
slow travel within that time frame, sometimes finishing patrol a day or so
early, sometimes coming in a day or two late. To further confuse bandits,
patrols occasionally make side trips from the road, or check on
surrounding villages (they try to hit each small village or farmstead at least
once a month with the 'farmstead' patrol which goes to them all over the 12
days).
Town
During Town duty a lance is divided into two teams of 15 each, day vs night
[generally, each team spends 3 days on duty and then 3 nights]. Each fifteen is
divided into 5 three man squads for patrolling the town. These three man squads
allow for one to go get help, leaving two to take care of the situation. One
squad each for the neighborhoods of the Shore, the Creek, the Docks, and the
Square. The fifth squad usually has one of the two mages attached and is
often led by an officer as well (total of 5 members). This squad moves at random
through the town, checking trouble spots and
occasionally patrolling outside the walls. Squads on patrol may stop for a
bite to eat, help folks with a broken wagon, get kittens out of trees for small
children, and generally be useful. Simply being seen as present, and
interacting with the townsfolk is a big part of their job.
The other team stays in one of the three wall towers, they are ready as a
reserve if their lance mates run into trouble. Of course, nine times out of ten
they spend their twelve hours off sleeping, eating, and caring for gear since
they are seldom needed. Generally they are spread five to a tower, with
the officers assigning a mage to one tower and splitting up to sleep in the
others themselves.
During town duty officers are very free, though they are expected to make
certain patrols are being done, and that their troops are at the ready, they are
also expected to move about investigating crimes, cultivating contacts among
townsfolk, and keeping an ear to the ground. On any given day they should stop
to speak with Hathron at least once, perhaps check in with a fellow officer,
check each wall tower, each Gatehouse (to see if suspicious
folk have arrived) and stop by the Shell Keep and the Towers. Some times they do
this as a pair, sometimes alone, sometimes they lead the 'reserve' squad for the
team on duty. The key is their flexibility. They only have to answer to each
other (and ultimately, the mayor of course:))
Sentry Duty
Duty stations for the 3 Gatehouses, Shell Keep, and Towers are established as 2
Guardsmen each for the Gatehouses, 4 for Shell Keep and 6 for the Towers
totalling 16 men. Each lance always has 2 mages assigned, so that totals 32
troops. The men serve 8 hours on, then 8 hours off for the six days they are on
sentry duty. The officers roam constantly between the posts making certain they
are all manned. Lance officers may decide for themselves where to assign the
mages for their shifts. [Though they cannot 'party' the whole time, it is simple
for officers checking between buildings to meet with folks or investigate
something in town while on Sentry duty. Those charged with investigating
crimes would be expected to continue those investigations around the rest of
their duties, for example.]
Staff Duties
Five officers have more individualized duties: Captain, Chief Mage, Chief
Tactician, Chief Scout, and Quartermaster.
Captain Hathron:
Hathron supervises the whole Guard, makes final decision, chairs officers'
meetings, ect, ect. He roams the posts and sometimes rides with patrols,
and sometimes patrols alone or with one or two officers. he also is the Guard's
main contact with the Mayor and the King. They likes to speak with him at least
every five days or so, though if Hathron is on a road patrol he will speak with
someone else instead.
Chief Mage Marik:
Marik trains and organizes the mage lance, but since they are generally split
amongst other lances while on duty, he has much free time, which he is expected
to fill by investigating ways to defend the Guard from magical attack, create
potions, spells, and other magical options. Also investigates magical crimes
within the town. Keeps tabs on potentially powerful wizards in town.
Chief Tactician Thand:
Thand is supposed to design training regimens for the Guard, plan for a possible
defence of the town from sudden assault or siege, and generally make plans for
possible tactical situations. he is also expected to occasionally join road and
town patrols (perhaps one per month), and investigate crimes as assigned. as the
Guard's most powerful remaining priest he also is expected to coordinate with
Lianna for priestly power and be the Guard's liaison with the local temples.
Also acts as Guard's engineer.
Chief Scout Aliske':
Aliske' is expected to keep abreast of bandit activity, decide where bandits are
likely to be lairing and plan how to eliminate them. She is expected to patrol
with lance road patrols, and to also patrol alone or with one or two other
officers. making certain the road is safe, and that the Guard knows the threats
within five or so days ride of town is her responsibility. She is not expected
to spend time on town patrol but if she needs to be in town to find things out,
that is where she needs to be.
Quartermaster Aeges:
Aeges is expected to coordinate pay, supply matters, and to manage the civilians
who clean, cook, and maintain the Shell Keep and Towers. He is also the Guard's
liaison to the Mayor's Tax Collector, who makes certain dock and gate tolls as
well as other taxes are paid. Aeges is also tasked by Hathron with keeping
careful track of the whose ships dock and leave port. He works closely with
Hathron in dealing with the Mayor and town notables, especially the merchants
(aside from the priests whom Thand and Lianna work with).
